The creation of the Talk Kit website is very nearly done and in order to ensure that we have the most accessible website possible, I had to put out a call. I reached out to members of the Inclusion London network to find people that would be able to test the accessibility and functionality of the website.

Prior to my call out, our digital partners at On Our Radar had a consultation session with someone from AbilityNet to better understand what would need to be put into consideration before fully launching our Talk Kit website.

Following on from the consultation, we (Inclusion London and our digital partners, OOR) were told that we would need:

  • Someone older (55+) or someone with additional needs for clarity and structure, eg severe autism, severe dyslexia
  • Someone using text-to-speech software
  • A magnification user
  • A user with motor impairments using speech recognition technology
  • A user with motor impairments using keyboard only navigation

One of the many benefits of being part of such a large disability network is that I was able to gather many responses from people to help fill the different categories needed for testing. There are many things that go into the creation of a website that I had never previously considered because I have never needed to.

Which is why it is of utmost importance that we are able to gather responses from as many different people as possible, otherwise we risk presuming that our websites or other digital offerings are easy to use. And this may not be the case for quite a number of people. Here’s hoping that testing day goes off without a hitch!
